Helvetireader Active Desktop (Snow Leopard) [HOW TO]
This is simple and informative, but it turned out great. I've been looking for a way to embed an active desktop in OS X for quite some time. What I find so strange, is when the desktop and the browser should really be merging together, like in Google Chrome OS, companies like Apple and Microsoft have been removing active desktop settings from their operating systems. So I decided to write a quick tutorial for my fellow Lifehackers.
I'm sure you guys will come up with some awesome stuff that I can copy ;)
Creating an Active Desktop In Leopard & Snow Leopard I chose to embed my Google Reader running a user script for the Helvetireader by Hicksdesign. To accomplish this, I used the site specific browser, Fluid. I then paired it with a choice desktop image and resided to my liking so that I could retain usable right click space. There are some great advantages to this setup, including the unread count in the dock and the ability to use the same keyboard navigation normally used in Google Reader.
Once I created my site specific browser, I clicked on Fluid in the menu bar and chose PREFERENCES and clicked on ADVANCED. I chose the preference ALLOW BROWSING TO ANY URL and checked it. I closed preferences.
I then hit CMD+L to bring up the location dialogue and browsed to the Helvetireader page and installed the user script. (NOTE: After installing the user script be sure to uncheck the BROWSING TO ANY URL preference, so that clicked links will open in your default browser and not leave you with a mess of semi transparent SSB windows.)
Once I had the site specific browser set up, I chose my wallpaper, resized the window to my liking. I also made sure to hide the grey bar at the bottom.
At this point, I wanted the window system to disappear and Google Reader to display on my desktop.
I returned to Fluid's PREFERENCES and clicked APPEARANCE. From there I chose WINDOW STYLE: CHROMELESS WINDOW LEVEL: EMBEDDED ON DESKTOP WINDOW SHADOW: OFF and adjusted the Opacity to my liking.
When you are finished hit CMD+Q and restart the application. Everything should be functional!
Other Elements -
**MENUBAR: Black Menubar(s) originally seen in Sweatshop Union's Photostream. I also inverted all of the program icons I use in the menu bar
1. Locate the Application,
2. Right Click to Show Contents,
3. Replace or invert the current black icons, and save,
4. Restart the Application).
-**DOCK: Mirage for Snow Leopard to make the dock transparent. I also replaced the status indicators while I was at it with the status indicators from Adium Minimal HUD. For the dock icons, I used Opacity Folders with my own personal modifications. WALLPAPER: Is Novocain, custom wallpaper created by me from stock photography.
**The elements of this theme require replacing many default files of Snow Leopard. You should be fine if you back up what you replace, but I can't guarantee any result for you. I hope you guys like it! Please comment! THANKS TO THE HOW-TO-GEEK FOR THE FEATURE ON LIFEHACKER!!!
Dark Red Sev READ DESCRIPTION!
Ok. Before you start throwing out the hate comments about the fact that Sev didn't look like this, let me explain the story!
Back in April or May of 2010, I started working on a custom. He wasn't supposed to be Sev, and he went through several different ideas. And he kept being a W.I.P. until I painted him all red. And I couldn't think of a good name or idea for him. So I decided to just call him a dark red version of Sev. But of course this was all before I really learned more about Delta Squad, and I just named him Sev. So yeah...I personally think he is one of my better customs. Even though he isn't very realistic to the game. But yeah I hope you guys like him!!
